The Foundations of Godly Living

By Robert L. Dickie

The life of a believer is like a beautiful building that God is in the process of constructing. We are the dwelling place of the eternal God who now lives in our hearts by faith. We are God’s workmanship. Our house (or life) is being built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

If we attempt to live the Christian life without first laying a good foundation, we will see our “spiritual building” crumble and collapse with every trial, temptation, and tragedy that we face. The fall of a professing Christian has consequences both in this life and in the life to come.

In this life, if we fall, we will lose joy, respect, opportunities to serve God, and tarnish the testimony of Christ. What scandal and shame many have inflicted on the church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by their fall into sin.
But in the life to come when we stand before a holy God in judgment, how awful will it be when those who lived in sin while professing to be the Lord’s will be exposed that they built their entire life on the sand of lies, deception, and disobedience.
